Moorabbin Primary School leading the way in MSL instruction P-4
Noxia our Principal was keen to add value to teacher knowledge and reinvigorate the way reading and spelling was delivered across the junior school and then into the senior section of the school. and so began the journey in 2016… 2 years later 7 staff are trained using the MSL approach (IMSLE). our Literacy leaders Stephen and Marie lead the school in intervention and additional assistance is targeted, focused and explicit.
Moorabbin Primary School made a commitment to overhaul their practices of how literacy skills were to be delivered and changed the way reading and spelling were to be taught across the P-4 area to begin with. Using evidence based best practice we set out to systematically transform our teaching utilising a Multisensory Structured Learning (MSL) approach. The senior school will be trained in morphology later on this year (2018). The school now has 7 trained AMADA’s on staff who have undertaken the MSL training with another 4 to be trained next year. Our Prep- Year 4 teaching focuses are systematic, structured and based on the MSL approach. Next year we are extending this to our Year 5-6 teachers where we will focus on exploring and extending our skill base in Morphology and Mathematics using the MSL approach. The school now has decodable books across the school and are looking to bring them to the library for all to enjoy. We are lucky enough to have extremely supportive and active parents who are also involved in the journey and one parent who has joined forces with others to develop online resources to support students with their reading. We are in the process of purchasing c-pens for each area of the school to further support students with needs with assistive technology. Our learning curve has been extremely rewarding and at the center of everything we do its for the benefit of the students at Moorabbin Primary School.
